Charity Cyclists Share the Tour Spirit

September 19, 2015

At 7:30am on a sunny Saturday morning in September, 500 cyclists gathered on the iconic Nanpu Bridge for a popular annual event. The 2015 Tour de Bund saw hotel guests, city residents, company teams, media, club and professional cyclists – including Ding Yong, winner of the Chinese National Road and Track Cycling Championships – saddle up for a charity ride through the heart of Shanghai.

Celebrating its fifth anniversary in 2015, this enjoyable event promotes the benefits of fitness and healthy living, increases awareness of pollution-free travel, and raises money for Raleigh China. This year, the Tour de Bund raised almost RMB 200,000 for charity. Since being founded in 2011, more than 1,500 participants have helped to raise a total of RMB 400,000. Raleigh China has used these funds to construct much-needed schools in rural areas of Guizhou province, China, and to build access roads and water storage facilities.

After a series of warm-up exercises, led by Kasia Wilkos, Director of Spa and Wellness at The Peninsula Shanghai, and two celebrity ambassadors, cyclist Ding Yong and ultimate marathon runner Chen Penbin, the Tour de Bund, riders embarked on two different routes.

The professional and club cyclists rode a challenging 50 km Tour, while leisure riders, hotel guests and the media enjoyed a scenic 30 km trip. Both routes followed the Pudong waterfront before crossing the Huangpu River and arriving at a refreshment point. After a short rest, the Tour continued along the riverside Bund before crossing the finishing line at The Peninsula Shanghai.

Upon completing the ride, the cyclists were joined by family members, sponsors, spectators and media partners for a lunchtime party at The Peninsula Shanghai to share the peloton spirit of the Tour de Bund.
