Low-Emission Luxury Travel in Shanghai

June 26, 2015
Recently The Peninsula Shanghai marked a “world first” when a special ceremony was held on to celebrate becoming the first hotel in the world to include a BMW i8 hybrid sports car in its car fleet.

The fabulous BMW i8 becomes the 14th fleet car for guests to enjoy at The Peninsula Shanghai, and further demonstrates a pro-active commitment to low-emission energy and environmental conservation.

The i8 launch is the latest initiative in a sustainable energy partnership between the hotel and the German luxury automaker, BMW, which includes two complimentary electric car-charging stations in The Peninsula Shanghai’s car park. It also aligns with the Chinese government’s twin goals of improving air quality and having five million electric cars on the nation’s roads by 2020.

Designed to revolutionise luxury driving, the BMW i8 is the first sports car with the consumption and emission values of a compact car. The perfect synchronisation of an electric motor and a combustion engine, it features highly efficient BMW eDrive technology and recyclable materials in the interior. Highly defined dynamics ensure optimal driving pleasure and extremely low energy consumption and emissions as guests cruise along the streets of Shanghai.

The introduction of the BMW i8 to The Peninsula Shanghai’s luxury fleet is the latest initiative to complement the hotel’s ongoing efforts to promote sustainable travel. This year sees the fifth anniversary of the annual Tour de Bund family cycle ride which fosters awareness of emissions-free transport in China’s largest city. In April 2015, the hotel also hosted the crew of the Solar Impulse, which is attempting the first round-the-world flight by a solar-powered aircraft under the slogan ‘The Future is Clean.’
