Iconic Chinese Athlete Heads PSH Fitness Campaign

November 23, 2015
Legendary Chinese ultra-marathon champion, Chen Penbin, becomes the hotel’s new Fitness Ambassador to promote the benefits of health and wellness in China

On 24 November, The Peninsula Shanghai introduced Chen Penbin, China's first international ultra-marathon champion, as the hotel’s new Fitness Ambassador. A signing ceremony was hosted in the Rose Ballroom attended by Chen Penbin, Joseph W.Y. Chong, General Manager and Managing Director of The Peninsula Shanghai Complex, and Li Sheng, Founder and CEO of SECA, plus a host of Chinese media.

Interest was heightened because Chen Penbin is one of China’s most admired sports stars. Born in East China’s Zhejiang province, he has competed in ultra marathons across some of the toughest terrains on the planet, including the 251km Marathon of the Sand through the Sahara Desert, where he became the first Chinese athlete to complete the race, and the 254km Jungle Marathon in the Amazon Rainforest in Brazil, where he claimed second place.

In 2014, 37-year-old Chen Penbin won the 100km South Pole Marathon, becoming the first Chinese runner to join an elite group of fewer than 100 athletes worldwide to have competed in ultra marathons in seven continents. In July 2015, he completed 100 marathons in 100 days, an extraordinary 4,219.54km journey across China that began in Guangzhou and finished in Beijing.

The appointment of such a high-profile Chinese sports star as The Peninsula Shanghai’s Fitness Ambassador forms part of a collaboration between the hotel and SECA, which organises the annual China Squash Open tournament hosted at The Peninsula Shanghai and also manages Chen Penbin.

It is the latest initiative in the hotel’s on-going campaign to promote physical fitness and healthy living on the Shanghai Bund, a world-class destination for arts, culture, dining and sports. The Peninsula Shanghai hosted a myriad of sport events in 2015, including the fifth annual Tour de Bund Charity Cycle Ride and 2015 China Squash Open, featuring the world’s best squash players. In addition, The Peninsula Spa introduced the globally acclaimed KORE Therapy programme.
